Warning
Tesla does not recommend using aftermarket wheels or tires. Wheels and tires are specifically engineered to meet the requirements of the vehicle and as such using aftermarket parts may yield reduced performance/handling and accelerate wear on Suspension components.
Warning
Model S/Model X wheel cross-fitting: There are no Model S tires/wheel packages that are approved/homologated for Model X.
Overviewlink
The road wheels fitted to the Tesla Model S are made from Alloys of Aluminum. These are designed with different patterns not only for aesthetic looks but for heat dissipation from the Braking System and for better airflow which can assist driving range.
The Model S can be fitted with either 19" or 21" Road Wheel sizes depending on the specifications of the vehicle this can either give more range or better road holding.
The advantages of 19" wheels are:
- Increased driving range
- Tire longevity
- Lower noise
The advantages of 21" wheels are:
- Enhanced grip and handling
- Quicker acceleration (due to grip)
- Aesthetics
The wheel type can be identified with the cfg\_wheeltype vehicle configuration.
Warning
This does not necessarily represent the actual current state of the vehicle as this can be configured from the owner on the touchscreen. A physical check will need to be made to 100% accurate on the actual wheel package fitted.
The driver can change the wheels configuration on the display by:
- Using the touchscreen to navigate to
Controls > Service > Wheel Configuration. - Selecting from the drop down menu the correct size and pattern of the wheel.
- The (S) on the drop down menu designates Staggered Set up.
This allows the vehicle to learn the new set up and changes the avatar.
Note
Changing the wheel configuration can have an impact on range estimates and pressure warnings.
Sizinglink
The sizing of each wheel is stamped on the inside of each rim. For example a base wheel for a Model S is

This can be broken down to its key components and explained as follows:
Sizelink
19 is the diameter in inches from one side of the rim to other passing through the center of the rim and excluding the tire.
8.0 is the width in inches from the outside rim to the inside rim.
J is the tire bead profile of the wheel designated letter. In this case, J is for passenger vehicles.
Offset/ETlink
The Offset or ET refers to the distance in millimeters from the wheel center line to the mounting surface. The offset can be one of the following:
- Zero (Neutral) Offset means that the mounting face is exactly in the center of the wheel.
- Positive Offset means that the mounting face is positioned closer to the outside of the wheel.
- Negative Offset means that the mounting face is positioned closer to the inside of the wheel.
Warning
Fitting rims with an offset that is different than original equipment will induce higher loads into suspension components which could result in accelerated wear to suspension, braking components and tire wear.
PCDlink
PCD (Pitch Circle Diameter) is the quantity of wheel fixings per wheel and the diameter of an imaginary circle that passes through the center of each of those fixings.
5x120 PCD will take five wheel fixings, at a diameter of 120mm.
Note
All Model S vehicles from SOP have a PCD 5x120.
Another term or phrase that is used when discussing a full 4 x Wheel/Tire package is either square or staggered, this refers to the wheels being the same width front or rear or not.
- Square is same width front and rear.
- Staggered is different width front and rear.
